What is a Barn Quilt?

A Barn Quilt is a large painted quilt square mounted on or directly painted on the gable end or side of a barn. The quilt square is positioned to be visible from the road and viewed as people drive past.

The quilt block designs are taken from traditional geometric patterns used by quilters. Family patterns are used as well as modern variations of traditional blocks.

Most quilt blocks are 4×4 or 8×8 depending on the size of the barn structure and distance from the road. They stay on the barns year round.

What Is A Barn Quilt Trail?

A Barn Quilt Trail is a self-guided driving tour of the decorated barns with a map to locate and reference the known history of the barn, significance of the quilt block and the Barn Quilt sponsor.
