Thorp Grist Mill
Address: 11640 N. Thorp Hwy, Thorp, Wa.
Quilt Block: ‘Mill Stone’
Mill History: From 1883 to 1946, Thorp Grist Mill served the residents of Kittitas County. A unique horizontal water turbine, which is still operational, powered the mill’s original rollers, complex system of grain elevators and other equipment, all of which are on display. A second turbine on the property once powered both an adjacent lumber mill and the city of Thorp, making Thorp the first city in central Washington with electricity. Also see the 23-acre Northern Pacific Ice Pond that provided refrigeration for the railroad and ice for all local residents.
