*In November, 2013, Colleen Kelleher contacted Barn Quilts of Kittitas County, wanting to commemorate her good friend Bill Bogatay and his family with a barn quilt on the old family home.  In Feb. 2014, Colleen passed, and did not see us put it on the house, but her sons, Phil and Jack came to do the honors with us.

Family History:  Martin and Johana Bogatay were Austrian immigrants and settled in Cle Elum in 1903.   Martin originally drove an old beer delivery wagon between Ronald and Cle Elum.  Then he ran the ‘Pheasant’ Cafe/ Grocery Store in the building next door to the west. Then he went to work in the coal mines the remainder of his life and died in 1950, most likely of the ‘black lung’.   Johanna and Martin made very potent ‘wine’ in the cellar of this house and sold it during the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.

Bill Bogatay was born in 1916, and worked 40 years as an engineer for the railroad.  His son, Craig and daughter, Susan Giovenale, live on the westside of the state.

Colleen Kelleher bought the property from Bill many years ago, but promised Bill she would not tear down the family home.  She was faithful to that promise and went one step further in commemorating it with this barn quilt.   The home is now the location for the Cle Elum Visitor Center and Colleen was very happy that it is now a friendly place for people to stop and get information on our beautiful area.
